To develop phonemic and phonological awareness, kindergarten and first-grade students must demonstrate an understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
Phonemic awareness is the ability to notice, manipulate, identify, and work with individual sounds in spoken language. Phonological awareness includes identifying words that rhyme, sentence segmentation, and identifying syllables in words and onsets and rimes.
Picture books can help pre-readers and emergent readers learn about sounds in spoken words including rhyming and alliteration. When we are building phonological awareness we are focusing on sounds and playing with those sounds. As teachers, it makes perfect sense to pair a read-aloud with our phonological awareness work.
Here are some of my favorite kindergarten read-aloud books that can be used to assist in the teaching of phonemic and phonological awareness.
