I haven't tested this out but the teacher next door uses pretzel sticks to practice using tally marks. I thought it was a pretty good idea. I haven't explicitly taught them yet but we use them to record information.
We do a fun song with tally marks to the tune of 10 Little Indians... adapted slightly from one I found online a while back:
Four vertical lines and one diagonal, Four vertical lines and one diagonal, Four vertical lines and one diagonal, Makes a group of five tally marks!
We stand up and act out the song each time we make a group of five. They just love it! Let me know if your kids like it if you end up using it with your class!
